Change the pictures! That is the idea behind BORGA.

Around the world, many people have specific, though mostly superficial pictures of black people in their heads.

If we examine the defaming ones of these pictures, we realize that they are mostly taken out of context and often based on unknowingness, fear, hate, and lies. And if they are not lies, single events are misused to paint a negative picture of the whole community.

Furthermore, these pictures are now turbo-boosted by all sorts of media, especially social media.

What can we do?

When Eugene, Eric, and I came together we found our contribution by telling an authentic black story, specifically an authentic Ghanaian story, which people all over the world can relate to: The struggle of trying to make something out of your life and getting the acknowledgment of your family.

At the same time, we wanted our story to be "liberating". Kojo, our protagonist, tries to liberate himself throughout the movie from the constraints of life and his own misconceptions.

BORGA became a journey that brought Ghanaians, Germans, Ghanaians living in Germany, and Germans living in Ghana closer together. We realized how much we had in common and how much we could learn from each other.

We hope that this spirit in front and behind the camera will resonate and will bring more people from different origins together.

York-Fabian Raabe, Director & Screenwriter
